The students are back from Winter Holidays. It's time to get back to sharing the love of reading in our Learning Commons! Students in our Kindergarten to Grade 3 classes are taking part in our Surrey Picture Book of the Year Unit. Ten titles are picked as nominees and sent to each school in the district. Students listen to each of the titles and then vote on which is their favorite. All of our read-alouds are accompanied by related activities to extend student comprehension and engagement. All the votes from each participating school are tallied and the winner for the Book of the Year is chosen! Students love that they play a large part in the choosing of the BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR in all of Surrey schools! This week we started the unit by reading our first nominee: The Cat, the Dog, Little Red, the Exploding Eggs, the Wolf, and Grandma By: Diane and Christyan Fox. Students really laughed out loud to this title! I have to say it was very enjoyable to read as well! I read it about 7 times, so I believe that says a lot! As a follow up to this read aloud, I had students in grades 2 and 3 compare and contrast our story to other versions of Little Red Riding Hood. We talked about the how the endings were different. We touched on similar and different details in each of the stories. Other classes participated in a quiz checking their recollection important details in this story and comprehension. Our grade 1/2 class talked about interrupting. Students connected this week's read aloud to another we have read previously with a similar theme: We also learned a catchy song to help us remember not to interrupt when someone else is talking! The kids really loved this one too! HeidiSongs for Classroom management has some great songs to help in the classroom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AifKm6TsWJA Students are really excited about this unit! Check back to see what we will be reading and doing next week with our second nominee :) !!
