While our learning space looks quite different for now (we are in the computer lab for the time being). We are making the most of our resources, as usual! Classes have started to read our Surrey Picture Book of the Year nominee titles! This week, classes have been looking at The Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Pena. Our reading response activity incorporated learning word processor skills, which are valuable to students to begin to learn at a young age! It was definitely a learning experience for everyone!

Since our Learning Commons space is undergoing some awesome changes and upgrades. Our classes will be meeting in the computer lab! Students K-5 are starting to learn about Coding this week! Above image shows Mr. Hiebert's class learning about and practicing their learning in our lab today. CODE.org is a great place to start for beginning coders! Students had a great first session together! We were all so engaged, we did not realize that class time had run out! Happy Coding!
Welcome back staff and students! I am so excited to return as the Teacher-Librarian for the James Ardiel Elementary Learning Commons! There is lots to come this 2016/2017 school year! The Learning Commons program will begin a bit later than expected this year, but students will still see me, Ms. Lefimil (Fuentes) on a weekly basis until our space is re-opened!!!
Our Learning Commons is currently under serious construction! Below are some 'before' pictures of our library. Our precious book collection is packed away for safe keeping. We are so excited to re-start the learning in our new and improved space, once renovations are all finished! 'After' pictures will be posted ASAP! Looking forward to an awesome school year ! Divisions 6, 7, 8 & 9 have been working on their passion projects during our library class time since December. This week we will be wrapping up our presentations! Here is a glimpse of some of the projects students from these classes have been working on. It has been a pleasure to watch the kids get excited as they decide what they want to research and learn about! The variety of topics and manner in which information was presented to the rest of the class has definitely led to exciting and informative library classes!!! Some presentations even prompted long discussions between peers, which extended their learning and engagement in each other's projects. My favorite part was having students tell me how much they learned, how fun it was and how they would improve on their projects next time they did something like this!! AWESOME!!!
The students are back from Winter Holidays. It's time to get back to sharing the love of reading in our Learning Commons! Students in our Kindergarten to Grade 3 classes are taking part in our Surrey Picture Book of the Year Unit. Ten titles are picked as nominees and sent to each school in the district. Students listen to each of the titles and then vote on which is their favorite. All of our read-alouds are accompanied by related activities to extend student comprehension and engagement. All the votes from each participating school are tallied and the winner for the Book of the Year is chosen! Students love that they play a large part in the choosing of the BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR in all of Surrey schools! This week we started the unit by reading our first nominee: The Cat, the Dog, Little Red, the Exploding Eggs, the Wolf, and Grandma By: Diane and Christyan Fox. Students really laughed out loud to this title! I have to say it was very enjoyable to read as well! I read it about 7 times, so I believe that says a lot! As a follow up to this read aloud, I had students in grades 2 and 3 compare and contrast our story to other versions of Little Red Riding Hood. We talked about the how the endings were different. We touched on similar and different details in each of the stories. Other classes participated in a quiz checking their recollection important details in this story and comprehension. Our grade 1/2 class talked about interrupting. Students connected this week's read aloud to another we have read previously with a similar theme: We also learned a catchy song to help us remember not to interrupt when someone else is talking! The kids really loved this one too! HeidiSongs for Classroom management has some great songs to help in the classroom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AifKm6TsWJA Students are really excited about this unit! Check back to see what we will be reading and doing next week with our second nominee :) !!
